some simple things

by the young republic

there are some simple things i know that work:
well-dressed mixed company, good wine, and dessert.
a game of croquet by the parthenon, a quilt the girls made stretched out on the lawn.
an old country house with a wood dock and pond, that old boston park where the boats look like swans.

there are some simple things that pick me up:
strained earl gray in a porcelain cup.
the beach boys play loud on a car stereo, a picture of my folks from long ago.
a date with a friend who you don't see enough, a movie on tv with an actor you love.

there are some simple things i know that work:
pans on the fire, bare feet in the dirt.
the first chill of fall- a call for sweaters and scarves, a couple in the field, alone with the stars.
a new pair of shoes that make your legs long, a slow summer waltz against a nice chest and arms.
